Santa Ana Volcano, or Ilamatepec, is the highest volcano in El Salvador and one of the easiest to climb. It will take you through the forest trail and finally end up on rocky ground around a bright crater lake whose color depends on the weather at that particular time.
Generally, most visitors to Pacaya Volcano come from Santa Ana or San Salvador, either through bus, car, or guided tours. Once at the park, all visitors form groups and accompany a guide from El Salvador, who takes them up the volcano. The journey can be done even by those climbing for the first time, thanks to the sights along the way, including Izalco Volcano.
First, you are treated to a spectacular sight of the boiling crater lake. After spending some time on top, trekkers return via the same trail. Because of its easy access, natural beauty, and geological formations, visiting the Santa Ana Volcano is one of the most exhilarating things to do in Central America.
