The Lanikai Pillbox Hike, also called the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, is a short but rewarding hike on Oahu’s windward side near Kailua. The trail features two WWII-era concrete bunkers (“pillboxes”) with panoramic views of Lanikai Beach, the Mokulua islands, and the Ko’olau mountains.

The hike is about 1 mile (1.6 km) round-trip with a 450 ft (140 m) elevation gain, taking 45–60 minutes. It’s moderately easy but can be steep in sections. Sunrise and sunset hikes are especially popular due to the dramatic ocean and mountain views.

Trail access is from a quiet residential street in Lanikai. Parking is limited; options include nearby Kailua Beach Park, walking from Kailua town, or using public transport. Bring water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes for safety.

Most hikers turn back after the second pillbox, but the Kaiwa Ridge Trail continues for a longer trek with fewer crowds. The trail is generally open year-round, with occasional maintenance closures.

Whether for photography, exercise, or a scenic adventure, the Lanikai Pillboxes are a must-do hike on Oahu.
