Mount Inerie stands as the highest volcano on Flores and is recognized as one of the most symmetrically shaped cones globally. At dawn, this majestic giant casts a striking triangular silhouette reminiscent of a natural pyramid; it’s an unforgettable sight.
I recently undertook a hike up Mount Inerie, and it ranks among the most spectacular sunrise treks I’ve ever had. It presents challenges but is certainly achievable for those who are reasonably fit. I strongly suggest enlisting a local guide, as the path can be tricky, particularly since many hikers commence their journey in darkness to reach the summit in time for sunrise.
This comprehensive guide will cover everything you should be aware of before embarking on your climb of Mount Inerie, encompassing logistics, accommodation, safety recommendations, gear, and the overall hiking experience.

My Guide: Alfredo "Fredo" Sua
I wholeheartedly recommend hiring Alfredo Sua from Bajawa. He significantly eased the hiking experience and enhanced safety.
What I appreciated about hiking with him:
· He picked me up in town using a motorbike.
· He supplied crucial gear (headlamp, gloves, walking stick).
· His English is quite proficient.
· He has a thorough understanding of the complex route.
· He is approachable and patient; he even paused while I flew my drone.
· His rates are reasonable and more affordable than several other guides available.
You can reach Fredo via WhatsApp at +62 821-4603-1138.
How to Reach the Trailhead
Mount Inerie is situated near Bajawa in central Flores. The trailhead is only a half-hour drive from the town.
You can arrive in Bajawa by:
· Taking a flight from Labuan Bajo, or
· Embarking on a road trip across Flores (a journey I highly endorse).
Bajawa also features cultural attractions, hot springs, and traditional villages. It’s worthwhile to stay for at least 2–3 days.
Hiking Mount Inerie – Anticipations
1. Easy Forest Walk (Initial Hour):
The trail starts off gently through woodland and savanna with a slight incline; it serves as a pleasant warm-up.
2. Steep Volcanic Terrain:
After passing through the forest, the hike becomes more demanding:
· Loose volcanic rock
· Scrambling sections
· Deep ravines
· The trail may sometimes become indistinct
This is when having a guide proves to be incredibly beneficial.
3. Approaching the Crater:
Upon spotting the crater rim, you will be roughly 30 minutes away from the summit. The winds pick up, but the path becomes easier to navigate.
4. Summit Sunrise:
We reached the top in about 3 hours and 15 minutes. The majority of hikers complete it in about 3 hours.
At the summit, you’ll be treated to:
· Breathtaking views over Bajawa
· The Savu Sea
· Sunrise behind Mount Ebu Lobo (which often emits smoke!)
· That iconic pyramid-shaped shadow
The Descent: Normal Route or “Volcano Surfing”
My guide presented me with two choices:
1. Retrace my steps.
2. “Surf” down a ravine of loose gravel.
Naturally, I opted to surf; it was chaotic yet thrilling.
Advantages:
· Quicker descent
· Exciting adventure
Drawbacks:
· Shoes filled with rocks.
· Increased likelihood of slipping.
· I had to pause multiple times to empty my shoes.
Return duration: about 2.5 hours.
Is Mount Inerie Safe?
Yes, the hike is generally safe for those who are fit.
The primary challenges include:
· Steep inclines
· Loose gravel
· The possibility of losing the trail (particularly in low-light conditions)
Hiring a guide can significantly minimize these dangers.
Volcano Activity
Inerie is regarded as active, yet its last documented activity was smoke emission in 1911; that was over a hundred years ago. It has not erupted in recent history.
What to Pack
✔ Durable hiking shoes – Essential
✔ Gloves – Safeguard your hands while climbing
✔ Jacket – It’s chilly and breezy at the peak
✔ Headlamp – A reliable one, not the inexpensive models some guides may have
✔ Water (minimum of 2 liters)
✔ Snacks
✔ Optional: trekking poles, camera, drone
Optimal Hiking Times
Ideal Season:
May to October (dry season)
Clear weather, limited rainfall, favorable conditions for witnessing sunrise.
Steer clear of December–March; during this time, rainfall is frequent, and visibility can be poor.
Best Time of Day:
Commence your hike around 1:30–2:00 AM to see the sunrise at the summit.
I departed from Bajawa at 1:45 AM, reached the trailhead by 2:15 AM, and made it to the top by 5:30 AM. The pyramid shadow emerges right after sunrise; it’s genuinely enchanting.
Bonus: Watu Nari Wowo Viewpoint (Avatar Hill)
If a full hike isn't possible, consider visiting this stunning viewpoint located just 15 minutes from Bajawa.
· Quick 15–30 minute ascent
· Breathtaking panoramic views of Inerie
· One of the top Instagram locations in Flores
· A must-visit!
