Kelimutu is one of Flores’ most iconic natural attractions, known for its three volcanic crater lakes that change color due to mineral and gas activity. The lakes can shift between turquoise, green, red, and even black throughout the year.
Reaching Kelimutu is fairly simple. Most travelers fly into Ende or Maumere, then continue by road to the small town of Moni at the base of the mountain. From Moni, it’s a short 30-minute drive to the national park entrance, followed by an easy 15–30-minute walk to the viewpoints.
Early morning offers the best visibility and brightest colors, although sunrise isn’t mandatory. The twin lakes are located at the main viewpoint, while the third lake sits in a separate crater at Inspiration Point.
Swimming is prohibited due to toxic water and cliffs. Entrance fees apply, and transport options include scooters, private cars, or shared vehicles. Moni offers simple but convenient accommodation and restaurants, with basic services like SIM-based internet and limited card payments.
Kelimutu is accessible year-round, though the dry season from April to November provides the clearest conditions.
