Mount Agung: Bali’s highest volcano, one of Indonesia’s best sunrise hikes. Mount Agung is Bali’s highest volcano. It’s one of the best sunrise hikes in the whole of Indonesia. It’s a steep and long hike, but the experience of hiking above the clouds and peeking into the massive crater will surely leave you speechless.

Trekkers usually depart at midnight to climb to the top and witness the sunrise. They have to choose either the route to Besakih Temple or to Pasar Agung Temple. Both routes are challenging, and it is necessary to hire a guide.

The volcano has cultural significance to the Balinese people, and it can be closed during religious events and heightened volcanic activity. Under regular conditions, it can be hiked all year round, with clear conditions present in the dry season.

Proper fitness, gear, and water are a must. Many trekkers spend the night before in Amed, Sidemen, and/or Kintamani villages for convenient access to the trek. Though the hike itself is rather challenging, this trek is Bali’s most rewarding activity.
