Huayna Picchu is the towering peak behind Machu Picchu and one of Peru's most famous hikes. The steep stone stairways with their dizzying drop-offs provide a wildly thrilling climb through jungle paths, ancient Inca buildings, and the fabled "Stairs of Death." Difficult but safe for fit hikers, the route offers breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding Andes mountains. Only a limited number of visitors are admitted, so tickets should be booked well in advance. If you have good shoes, water, and a basic awareness of altitude, the hike up Huayna Picchu is an absolute not-to-be-missed adventure while in the country.
