Tangkahan is a peaceful riverine settlement on the boundary of Gunung Leuser National Park and is known for keeping a few Sumatran elephants that have been rescued from poaching and logged areas. Visitors can head to this settlement to experience relaxed activities such as a jungle hike with the Sumatran elephants, observation of Sumatran elephant river baths, and exploration of Sumatran rainforests. This settlement is accessible from both Bukit Lawang and Medan and can be a wonderful addition to one’s Sumatra travel itinerary. In fact, Tangkahan is one of the very best places for rainforest exploration and Sumatran elephant conservation efforts.
