One of the most sought-after hiking trails offered by Patagonia is the hike to Fitz Roy, which begins from a small mountain resort town known as El Chaltén. This hike will take you through woodlands, valleys, and scenic spots until you reach the edge of a bright blue glacial lake known as Laguna De Los Tres at the base of Mount Fitz Roy.

The majority of the trail is of moderate to easy grade, except for the last ascent when the grade becomes steep. Even if you are not taking the trail to the lake, the mid-way viewpoint yields fantastic views of the mountains with much less effort.

El Chaltén is the point of origin of this trek, as buses and car rentals come from El Calafate. It’s very easy to access from there to begin your trek. In addition, due to the sudden weather conditions of this region of Patagonia, you need to be prepared.

All in all, Fitz Roy is a very rewarding day hike for most tourists, as it has some of the best scenery in South America, regardless of technical experience.
