One of the most photographed locations in all of New Zealand and a must-see for all fans of _Lord of the Rings_ is Hobbiton, located near Matamata on the North Island. Here is a re-creation of the _Lord of the Rings_ setting, complete with 44 hobbit holes and a Green Dragon Inn.

The set was initially erected in the year 1999 for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was further enhanced in the Hobbit trilogy. At present, visitors can opt for a walkabout tour, visit the tiny homes, and relax amidst the green surroundings.

It is easier to drive there on your own from Auckland (taking 2 hours) or a combined bus tour that will take care of transport. There are daily tours, so you can book your tickets online in advance. This will take a couple of hours, including a shuttle ride to the spot.

The North Island's mild climate provides Hobbiton with year-round scenery. The tours are ideal for photographers or fans wishing to experience life in the depths of Middle-earth without any specific timing or seasons.
