The Blue Lakes Trail is a popular destination in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains and leads hikers through three alpine lakes: Lower Blue Lake, Middle Blue Lake, and Upper Blue Lake. The Blue Lakes trailhead lies near Ridgway and can be accomplished in day hikes from Ridgway, Ouray, or Telluride.

Difficulty level is moderate to strenuous, depending on your distance, with the Lower Blue Lake Trail being appropriate for most hikers. Plans and activities will include sightseeing adventures such as trekking and mountain hikes. Some mountains offer accommodations and dining services.

Trail length is 7-11 miles round trip and has an elevation of 9,350-13,000 feet. Trail length and duration range from 3-8 hours. The trail is accessed from the main trailhead in Ridgway, and the terrain is such that high clearance is needed for the last few miles to the parking area.

Tenting facilities are available at the lower lake on weekends, and one can spot Alpine flora, birds, and sometimes wildlife. One always needs to carry water, snacks, and layers for a changeable mountain climate.
